"He was knowledgeable, straightforward, and genuinely easy to talk to. He gave me a quote that was much lower than what I expected… When he came to install the lock, he finished the job in under five minutes. He definitely earned my trust, which is something that's rare these days. I highly recommend this company."

Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington DC — a vibrant, walkable community of over 80,000 residents anchored by Eastern Market, Barracks Row on 8th Street SE, Lincoln Park, and the Folger Shakespeare Library.
The neighborhood is defined by some of the most beautiful rowhouses in the country — Federal, Victorian, and Italianate brick homes dating back to the 1790s. Many retain original or near-original architectural features including transom windows, wood door frames, and period iron hardware. The Historical Society of Washington DC recognizes Capitol Hill as one of the most intact 19th-century residential districts in the country.
What every Capitol Hill homeowner, renter, and property manager should know.
Most pre-1950 rowhouses on the Hill use mortise lock sets — a rectangular lock body that fits inside the door. These are more complex than modern cylindrical locks and require a locksmith who knows how to service them. Forcing or replacing them with the wrong hardware can damage irreplaceable original doors. We work with mortise locks every week.
The Hill's older brick rowhouses have less weatherstripping and tighter door tolerances than modern builds. When outdoor temps drop below 28°F — which happens 15–25 days a year in DC — moisture seeps into lock cylinders overnight and freezes the pin tumblers solid. Apply a graphite or Teflon-based lubricant every October to prevent it.
Capitol Hill has a high rental and resale turnover rate. Previous tenants, landlords, contractors, and real estate agents may all have copies of your keys — often without anyone realizing it. Rekeying costs a fraction of a lock change and guarantees you're the only one with access. We recommend doing it within the first week of moving in.
DC summers are brutally humid. Wood door frames on Capitol Hill's historic rowhouses absorb moisture and expand, causing deadbolts to bind against the strike plate. If your door suddenly feels stiff or the key turns hard in summer, the fix is usually a strike plate adjustment — not a new lock. We can diagnose and fix this in one visit.
Many Capitol Hill rowhouses have been subdivided into 2–4 unit rental properties. Managing key control across multiple tenants is a real security challenge. A master key system — where each unit has its own key but a single master opens all — is the most practical solution for landlords and property managers on the Hill.
Capitol Hill is one of DC's most walkable and heavily trafficked neighborhoods — Eastern Market, the Capitol grounds, and Barracks Row draw thousands of visitors daily. Higher foot traffic means more opportunity for opportunistic property crime. A Grade 1 deadbolt, reinforced strike plate, and a door bar are the three most cost-effective upgrades for any Hill residence.
